1. Introduction
1.1 Background
While Coventry University earned its University status in 1992, its story began in 1843. The College of Design and the School of Art were the first few faculties to be built. In 1940, the Coventry Blitz destroyed much of the city and the School of Art. Yet, the city and its community chose “forgiveness, reconciliation, and peace.“
Since then, Coventry has become the City of Peace and Reconciliation for its efforts against violence. As a reminder of the event, the university has also adopted the city’s spirit and the identity of the “Phoenix.” Some of the present humanitarian efforts continuing this legacy are
- The Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (2014), a centre for many of the institution’s peacebuilding and social relations work
- The RISING Global Peace Forum (2015), a platform for seminars and discussions on global peace issues
- ConnectMe, a 3-year project that helped people ease into education, training and employment
- School Linking (2017 – 2018), a programme to foster social cohesion at community level
